Why Your Birthday Changes Day Each Year
Your birthday shuffles forward through the week on a pattern that repeats every 28 years — until a century year breaks it.
If your birthday was on a Tuesday last year, it is on a Wednesday this year — unless a 29 February fell in between, in which case it has jumped to Thursday. That single rule explains almost everything about how birthdays move, and it comes from one piece of arithmetic.
The one-day shift
A common year is 365 days. Divide by 7 and you get 52 weeks with a remainder of 1. That leftover day is what pushes every fixed date forward one weekday each year.
A leap year is 366 days, leaving a remainder of 2, so the shift doubles. Which years get the double shift depends on where your birthday sits relative to 29 February: if your birthday is in January or February before the 29th, the leap day falls after it and affects the following year's shift instead.
That detail is why two people born in the same year can see their birthdays move differently, and why a simple rule of thumb never quite works for everyone.
The 6, 11, 6, 5 pattern
Stack up the one- and two-day shifts across a leap cycle and a pattern emerges. Your birthday returns to the same weekday after gaps of 6, 11, 6 and 5 years — adding to 28.
Over that 28-year span, your birthday visits every day of the week exactly four times. The order of the gaps depends on where you start in the cycle, which is why your own sequence might read 11, 6, 5, 6 instead. The set is always the same.

The practical upshot: if you want your birthday on a Saturday again, it is rarely more than 11 years away and often much less. Our day of the week calculator lists your actual upcoming years rather than making you work from the pattern.
Where the cycle breaks
The 28-year cycle assumes every fourth year is a leap year. That holds within a century but fails at century years not divisible by 400.
1900 was not a leap year. Neither will 2100 be. At those points the pattern skips a beat and resets, so anyone whose lifetime spans 2100 will find their sequence of weekdays interrupted. If you were born in 1996 you will notice it at 104, which is optimistic but not impossible.

When calendars repeat entirely
Individual dates repeat their weekday on the 28-year cycle, but whole calendars repeat too. A common year's calendar is reused after 6, 11 or 28 years depending on its position; a leap year's calendar repeats only every 28 years.
The full Gregorian calendar repeats exactly every 400 years, because that cycle contains 146,097 days and 146,097 divides evenly by 7. The calendar for 2026 is identical to 1626 and will be identical again in 2426 — the same weekdays, the same leap years, the same everything.
This is why paper calendars are sometimes reprinted and sold as "reusable": a 2026 wall calendar will be accurate again in 2037.
Working it out in your head
John Conway's Doomsday rule turns weekday calculation into something you can do in a few seconds. It rests on the fact that within any year, a set of easily remembered dates all fall on the same weekday: 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10 and 12/12, plus the last day of February.
Find that weekday — the year's "doomsday" — and every other date can be counted from the nearest anchor. For 2026 the doomsday is Saturday, so 4 April, 6 June, 8 August, 10 October and 12 December 2026 are all Saturdays.
Learning the doomsday for a handful of years is enough to impress people at parties, and the underlying idea — that the calendar is far more regular than it looks — is the same one that makes all of this predictable in the first place.
