Why the gap in years seems to change

The true difference between two birth dates is a fixed number of days and never changes. What does change is the difference between two ages in completed years, and that is what people usually notice.

Take two people born 18 months apart. For part of every year they are one year apart in stated age, and for the rest they are two. Nothing about them has changed — one has simply had a birthday and the other has not yet caught up. The calculator shows both figures so the discrepancy is visible rather than confusing: an exact gap in years, months and days, and the difference in whole years as at the date you choose.

Reading the result

  • Exact gap — the calendar difference between the two birth dates. This is constant.
  • Gap in whole years today — the difference between the two current ages. This fluctuates by one during the year.
  • Total days apart — the unambiguous figure, useful when the two above disagree.
  • Ages on the comparison date — what each person's age was or will be on the date you selected.

Common uses

Parents use it to work out the spacing between siblings, which matters for school years, childcare eligibility and shared bedrooms. Genealogists use it to sanity-check records: an implausible gap between a parent and child is often the first sign of a transcription error or two people of the same name conflated into one.

It is also used for the ordinary curiosity of comparing yourself with a friend, a partner or a public figure. Set the comparison date to a year in the future to see how the stated gap will read then.

Note: this tool measures a span of time. It makes no judgement about relationships, and it is not a guide to legal age requirements, which vary by jurisdiction and are set out separately in our guide to legal age milestones.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the age difference between two people?

Enter both dates of birth. The calculator returns the exact gap in years, months and days, the difference in whole years as at today, and the total number of days between the two births.

Why does the age gap change during the year?

The gap between two birth dates never changes. What changes is the difference between two ages in completed years, because one person has a birthday before the other. A gap of 18 months reads as one year for part of the year and two years for the rest.

Can I see the gap at a past or future date?

Yes. Set the comparison date to any date and the tool shows what each person's age was or will be on that date, along with the gap in whole years at that moment.

Does the order of the dates matter?

No. The calculator identifies which person is older and labels the result accordingly.

Can I use it for twins or people born days apart?

Yes. Very small gaps are reported in days rather than being rounded away.
