Which day of the week is your birthday on?
Because a common year is 365 days — 52 weeks plus one day — your birthday normally moves forward by one weekday each year. It jumps forward by two whenever a 29 February falls between one birthday and the next.
The practical effect is a repeating pattern: your birthday lands on the same weekday every 5, 6 or 11 years, and over a full 28-year cycle it visits each day of the week exactly four times. That cycle holds within a century but breaks at years like 1900 and 2100, which are divisible by 100 but not 400 and so skip their leap day.
Counting birthdays you have had
The number of birthdays celebrated is simply your age in completed years. It is worth stating plainly because it trips people up: on the day you are born you have had zero birthdays, and you have your first a year later. A person who has "had 40 birthdays" is 40 years old, not 41.
The one exception is someone born on 29 February. A leapling born in 2000 has had a calendar birthday roughly once every four years, even though they age at the same rate as everyone else.
Golden birthday
A golden birthday, sometimes called a champagne birthday, is the year you turn the same age as the day of the month you were born on. Born on the 14th? Your golden birthday is your 14th. Born on the 30th? Your 30th. Anyone born on the 1st has theirs at one year old, and only people born on the 29th, 30th or 31st have to wait until their thirties.
Making the countdown useful
The countdown updates every second while the page is open, so it works well left running on a second screen in the days before an event. The figure is calculated from your device clock and your local time zone; if you travel across time zones, the count adjusts automatically because it is anchored to local midnight wherever you are.
Frequently asked questions
How many days until my birthday?
Enter your date of birth above and the countdown appears immediately, updating every second. It also shows the exact date, the weekday it falls on, and the age you will reach.
What happens if my birthday is today?
The tool recognises the date and shows a birthday message instead of a countdown, along with the age you have just reached.
How does it handle a 29 February birthday?
In common years the countdown targets 28 February as the observed birthday. In leap years it targets the real 29 February.
Does the countdown use my local time zone?
Yes. It reads your device clock and counts to midnight in your current local time, so it stays correct if you travel.
What is a golden birthday?
The year you turn the same number as the day of the month you were born on. Someone born on the 22nd has their golden birthday when they turn 22.
